1998 Dodge Durango recall
DaimlerChrysler Corporation recalled 1998 and 1999 Dodge Durango for potential
wear issues of some parts discovered by their engineers after having high-mileage
durability tests. Also inspected is the wear of the rear brake tube caused by
contact with the vehicle's underbody.
The brake tubes were equipped with a rubber "isolator" device that separates
the tube from the underbody. These recalls affect about 162,000 vehicles. The
company also provided corrective measures for the defective parts including replacement
of the straps used to support the fuel tank with redesigned straps in the 1998-1999
Durango.
Recalls done by NHTSA recalls insufficient clamp load of fastener that secures
generator cable resulting in a loose connection and electrical arcing. Contact
of the rear-brake tube with the underbody cross member also results in a hole
in the tube that could reduce braking of rear wheels. Another defect is the detachment
of sound-deadening material inside the steering wheel from the cover and housing
that can cause failure in the driver-airbag system.
