1999 Dodge Durango
1999 Dodge Durango comes equipped with three engines to choose from, the 5.2-liter
V8, 5.9-liter V8 and the new 3.9-liter V6. The 5.2-liter engine producing 230
horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque offers more power than the Explorer's
optional 5.0-liter V8. T he 5.9-liter Dodge V8 has fuel economy rated at 12/16
mpg city/highway compared
with the 5.2-liter V8 rated at 13/17. It generates 215 horsepower and 290 pound-feet
of torque. The 3.9-liter V6 is rated at 175 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque.
Two different transfer cases are offered for the four-wheel-drive versions, both
use manually operated shift-on-the-fly lever. Standard is a part-time four-wheel-drive
transfer case.
However shifting into this transfer case is only appropriate for low-traction
situations such as muddy or snowy roads. There is no slippage between the front
and rear wheels causing the tires to hop and chatter in tight parking lot maneuvers.
People living in places with dry climate may find it ideal. On steep grades, it
can be shifted into low-range four-wheel drive. The optional full-time four-wheel-drive
transfer case comes with a planetary center differential suitable for light-off-highway
travel. The 1999 models offer changes for more comfortable and convenient rides
such as the added remote audio controls on the steering wheel, customer programmability
for the rolling door locks and horn, heated side mirrors and a redesigned overhead
console.
